Close by was Elephant Butte State Park, named since the Butte looks like an Elephant. There were a lot of RV parks in this area due to the large lake. Not a bad place to stay, beautiful views.
Wednesday we left and headed to Santa Fe. We stopped in Albuquerque at the Air Force Base then headed North getting stuck in traffic. We heard the winds were going to get strong and once we got to Hyde State Park in Santa Fe at 7:00 pm it was cold and windy. This looked like a really nice park however, we decided to only stay the night and left the next morning heading north....not sure that was a good idea as it got more windy and started to snow.
There were some sites along the way like Camel Rock and the Echo Ampitheater but we were anxious to get to our next stop.
We kept looking at the weather on our Iphones and originally we were going to keep going north towards Pegosa Springs then west to Durango, Colorado but it was snowing and more cold than it was where we stopped in Chama, popular for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, biking, fishing and hiking in the nearby National Forests. We stayed at Little Creel RV Park and were one of only two RV's there. It was pretty as it was on the flowing Chama River. The sun would come out and it would snow at the same time. We stayed in the RV most of the time as it was too cold to be outside.
We had to leave the furnace and heater on all night with the cabinet doors open and a 40 watt bulb on inside the battery compartment all night as well as unhook the hose from the water line. The temperature got down to 17 degrees! A real test for the "short bus", as Bill calls it. Thank goodness we had no problems. We woke up and decided to take our chances with the weather and instead of heading west in New Mexico to more of the same landscape we had been seeing for over a week, we headed north to Colorado.
